Weekend Recap: Jeff Koons, Sailing, and More

Last Updated on December 11, 2014 by Karen

Happy Wednesday, friends!  I hope your week is going well.  Mine has been quite busy since I practically got nothing done over the weekend, but it was a whole lot of fun.  Remember I mentioned in my last post that we were going to Jeff Koon’s exhibit? Well, that was a good call because we really enjoyed the visit. The recurring theme in this exhibit is the transformation of everyday objects into art; some of the pieces were mind-blowing and daring, others were just strange and bizarre.

There’s a ten foot tall playdoh, made of aluminum painted to resemble playdoh. This took Koons 20 years to build!

There are a lot of inflatables…

And large shiny sculptures…

Some are whimsical…but they make you blush a little ;)

Split Rocker is one of Koons’ iconic work, inspired by his son’s pony and dinosaur toy rockers.

Finally, my favorite one is this piece with inflatable pool toys entangled in a metal trash can.  It didn’t occur to me that they are in fact made of polychromed aluminum, not inflated plastic.  Sometimes your eyes can really trick you!

Right after our museum visit, we started to get hungry, so made our way over to Xian Famous Foods for lunch.  I have never been there before so I ordered the Spicy Cumin Lamb Noodle Soup, a popular dish, and James had the Spicy and Tingly Beef Noodles – they were both delicious!  It was not as spicy as I had expected, but I really liked it.  There were many more items on the menu I wanted to try (I heard the lamb burgers were good too).  Must go back again!

Sunday started super early, as we had a train to catch to go up to Port Washington with our friends for some sailing. The day was not too hot, had a bit of a breeze going, and was just perfect for being out on the waters.

We passed by some fancy houses mansions in Long Island Sound. Does that remind you of…Gatsby?

Last night, James met up with me after work at Clinton Hall for a Sam Adams Single Hop Series event where we tried some delicious brews.

Afterwards, we headed home to try cooking burgers on our plate grill, which turned out fantastic.  The resulting burger patty wasn’t too dry or greasy.  Homemade burger is the way to go!
