What is in Starbucks new Chocolate Cream Cold Brew?
Starbucks Chocolate Cream Cold Brew is made with ice, cold brew coffee flavored and sweetened with vanilla syrup, and topped with a creamy layer of chocolate whipped topping.
What does it taste like?
It tastes like a nostalgic chocolate milkshake due to the chocolate and malt flavors in the cold foam, almost like melted ice cream. There is a perfect balance of chocolate and coffee flavors like a mocha. The vanilla tastes very subtle in this drink.
The drink itself has just a hint of sweetness, so if want it sweeter, you can add more vanilla syrup.
Here are the ingredients you will need to make the Starbucks copycat Chocolate Cream Cold Brew coffee recipe:
Cold-brew coffee: You can use homemade cold brew coffee or storebought cold brew concentrate like the Starbucks cold brew coffee. If you want to make it yourself (which I highly recommend you do!), check out my easy cold brew recipe here.
Vanilla syrup: This is basically simple syrup mixed with vanilla extract. You can use storebought Starbucks Naturally Flavored Coffee Syrup in Vanilla or make it yourself. See below for the homemade vanilla syrup recipe.
Heavy cream: If you use heavy cream alone, it will have a stiff, whipped cream consistency. Adding milk to the mixture gives it a silky smooth cream texture.
Milk: I like to use whole milk or 2% milk for best results.
This recipe serves one, but you can easily double or triple the recipe.
How do you make vanilla syrup?
To make vanilla syrup, add 1 cup granulated sugar and 1 water to a small saucepan over low heat. Simmer on low and stir until the sugar has dissolved. Remove from heat and stir in 1 1/2 tablespoon vanilla extract (or one vanilla bean). Allow the syrup to cool to room temperature and keep in the fridge for up to 1 week.
Can you use a natural sweetener instead of refined sugar?
Yes, instead of using granulated sugar, you can add maple syrup (to taste) and a 1/4 teaspoon of vanilla extract in your cold brew.
Can you substitute the heavy cream and milk with half-and-half?
No, if you make the substitute, the cold cream won’t actually froth well.
What are some variations to this drink?
If you omit the chocolate malt powder and cocoa powder from the cold foam, this drink instantly becomes a Starbucks Vanilla Sweet Cream Cold Brew drink! The vanilla cold brew part is the same as in the Vanilla Sweet Cream Cold Brew – so basically you get two drinks in one!
Can you make this Chocolate Cream Cold Brew vegan or dairy-free?
No, unfortunately chocolate malted milk powder contains dairy and is not vegan. You can make a similar chocolate cold foam without it using coconut cream, coconut milk, and cocoa powder. It won’t be exactly the same without the malt flavor, but it will be still pretty good.
