Happy Friday all! Today I want to share with you a recap of our recent vacation in Bermuda. Last month, we spent a few days in Bermuda, which was exactly what I needed to unwind and relax before I started my new job. Our trip planning consisted of loose itineraries, with a couple of planned stops at the beaches we each wanted to see.
Our first item on the agenda: pick up a scooter! Scooter was our mode of transportation for the entire time we were there (only residents can own cars). It was a little scary at first, but after getting used to the speed and being on the left side of the road, we started to enjoy the scenery and the freedom to go anywhere on our own schedule!
We arrived on the first day of the Cup Match, which is basically an annual cricket game between Somerset and St. George, with celebrations all around the island, I had to call a towing service but it was great it was reviewed by Towing Less, so I knew it was a good deal Almost all businesses are shut down and Bermudians make the most out of it during this national holiday. Watching the game is quite a unique experience. Unlike the baseball stadiums we are used to back home, you don’t have designated seats at cricket stadiums. Some families even bring TV’s, radios, grills, and extra chairs to furnish their “suites”.
I snacked on some stadium food, Bermuda-style, which included a local favorite conch fritters. We also played a few Crown and Anchor dice games. And broke even — not bad!
The next day, we headed to the capital city, Hamilton, expecting it to be loud and vibrant and fun. Nope. It was completely dead quiet, probably because of the Cup Match weekend. Shops on Front Street, one of the main shopping streets in Hamilton, were all closed.
One adventure that took us all around the island was our quest to find amazing beaches. You can find beautiful pink sandy beaches with turquoise water all over the island, but we were also able to track down a few places that are truly unique, like Sea Glass Beach. We missed it a few times and almost gave up trying to find it, until some friendly locals pointed us in the right direction.
The beach is covered in big and small pieces of weathered sea glasses!
Then there are long stretches of beach, like Horseshoe Bay Beach, which has been rated as the #8 beach in the world by Tripadvisor. It’s clearly a popular spot among cruise ship day trippers.
We found this secluded cove near West Whale Bay and basically had it all to ourselves for the afternoon. Sipping on wine, taking a dip in the water when it got too warm. :)
Jobson’s Cove has got to be one of the coolest coves I have visited yet. It is located next to Warwick Long Bay and is surrounded by cliffs all around. Because it is completely separated from the sea, the water is calm and the waves are gentle. Like a natural swimming pool!
It’s deep on one end, which makes it safe for jumping off from the cliff rocks.
And of course, we did what most tourist guides suggested and went into the historic town of St. George to explore along the narrow winding streets and some colonial buildings in Kings Square.
Lunch was at a place called White Horse Restaurant where I tried a popular Bermudan soup, fish chowder seasoned with sherry pepper sauce and dark rum.
Another place we stopped by was the Blue Hole Park. There is a small pond in the middle of a wooded area with lots of caves nearby. James and I both got a kick out of exploring the caves so we spent quite a bit of time going through those.
I wish I had more to share with you, but I can honestly say, most of our time on vacation was spent on the beaches. We walked along the pink sand beaches. We splashed in the waves and snorkeled in the crystal clear water. And I mean crystal clear — just look at that!
Most of the meals we had were impromptu, except for our dinner at Coconuts which we had planned ahead. They offer a ton of seafood dishes, like the Grilled Octopus with Chutney (James’ dish) and Bermuda Rock Fish with Ponzu Butter Sauce (mine) we ordered….but, my favorite part of dinner was their view! It’s just right over a private beach, and we got to enjoy the sunset as we dined.
We sipped on the local drinks too: Dark and Stormy and Rum Swizzle. In fact, we have been making Rum Swizzle at home with the dark rum we picked up before we left.
That pretty much highlights our Bermuda vacation. We got lucky with the weather being in the 90’s with no rain. Being just a hop and a skip away, it’s an easy destination to get to for a long weekend trip. Until next time!
