These sweet and sticky rice krispies treats are packed with nutty, buttery flavors and just a hint of sea salt. It’d be hard to stop at eating just one!
The Fourth of July really sneaked up on me this year – it’s just a week away! Last year, James and I celebrated the holiday by inviting our friends over to enjoy a big spread of classic dishes and to watch the Macy’s fireworks on the rooftop. Fast forward one year, he’s heading to his family’s cabin in Wyoming, the fireworks is moving to the East River, and as for my plans? I’m not exactly sure yet!
What I know for sure is that I’ll be making these rice krispies treats this week. Rice krispies treats are always a welcomed dessert, and today, I’m giving you a sophisticated version made with sea salt and brown butter.
The ingredients are pretty simple – butter, marshmallows, and rice cereal. The only extra step here is heating the butter to give it a rich nutty flavor and a caramel color. The trick is to use a stainless steel saucepan, or a light-colored pan, because you want to be able to see the color of the butter as it browns. If you use a dark-colored pan, you’ll risk ending up with burnt butter.
The brown butter takes them to a whole new level of deliciousness, and I think it’s safe to say that kids and adults alike will love it!
Salted Brown Butter Rice Krispies Treats
Ingredients
- 3 tbsps unsalted butter
- ¼ tsp sea salt
- 1 10- ounce bag mini marshmallows
- 5 cups Rice Krispies cereal
- Mini marshmallows and sprinkles for decoration (optional)
Instructions
- Grease or coat a 13×9 inch pan with non-stick spray.
- In a large saucepan, melt butter over low heat. Once melted butter starts to foam (it will turn to a caramel color and smell nutty - watch it closely so that it does not burn), add salt and marshmallows, and stir continuously until the marshmallows are completely melted. Remove from heat and stir in rice cereal.
- Using a piece of wax paper or greased spatula, press rice cereal mixture evenly into prepared pan. If using marshmallows and sprinkles, add to the surface and press slightly to adhere. Allow to cool completely before cutting into 2? squares.
