The weather is getting nicer and days are getting longer, which means it’s time to head out for some outdoor adventure! There’s a lot of trails and parks where we live for us to explore, whether it is for a short hike or a long day trip. I’m so excited for more adventures this summer! When it comes to hiking, my experience is that the better prepared you are, the easier it’ll be to enjoy a stress-free day in the great outdoors.

So I’ve compiled this list of 8 essential items you’d want to bring on your next hike.

Before you head out to your local parks and trails, I hope you’ll use this checklist as a guide and adapt these items to fit your needs.

1. Water bottles – Staying hydrated is so important on a hike! No matter what you’re doing outdoors, make sure you bring enough water. I must admit that there were times when we had to cut short our hike and turn around because we underestimated how much water we needed.

2. Food – Keep up your energy with yummy treats on the trail. Stopping for a bite will prevent you from becoming hangry and help you power through a challenging hike. I love having a SNICKERS® Bar or TWIX®  Bar on hand when I get to stop and take in the stunning sights. I also tuck in EXTRA® Gum in my backpack for when I need a little refresher.

Right now, you can buy packs of SNICKERS®  bars, TWIX®  bars, EXTRA®  gum and other participating brands to bring on your on-the-go summer adventure, whether it is hiking, camping, picnic, or beach trip. Visit NeverStopSummering.com for rules and free method of entry. Ends August 31st. No purchase required to win.

 3. Navigation – Having a map can keep you from getting lost or help you find your way again. An old-school map is lightweight and easy to use. If you’re using your phone as a map, make sure you save a picture of the map to your phone (in case there is poor phone signals) and bring a portable battery pack just in case.

4. Sun protection – Wearing sunscreen (best if waterproof) and SPF lip balm is so important to protect your skin from powerful UV rays, even when the weather looks cloudy. I also like to bring along a hat and sunglasses to protect my face and eyes.

 5. Flashlight – A flashlight is useful for finding your way when the sun goes down. We prefer to bring a mini headlamp since it is hands-free, but a phone can be used in a pinch. Just make sure you have extra battery.

6. First aid kit – Be prepared for blisters, splinters, and cuts with a first aid kit. I like to include some bandages, antiseptic wipes, and painkiller at a minimum. Keep this lightweight kit in your daypack so you can whip it out in case of emergency.

7. Daypack – Having a good backpack to keep all your hiking essentials and stay organized. Personally I like ones that have lots of compartment and hip belt to take the pressure off my shoulders.

8. Layers – Weather can change quickly on any hiking trip, even on days that start out nice and warm. I always recommend wearing layers of quick-dry clothes so you can add or remove layers. I also like to pack a light-weight rain jacket for rain as well as wind protection regardless of the forecast.

There you have it, the 8 essential items you would want to bring for your next hike. Set them out in advance, put them all in one bag, so you can quickly grab it for your next adventure. Have fun and enjoy!
