Fluffy, frothy dalgona whipped coffee served hot or iced – made with just three ingredients!
You might have seen this new coffee drink that has taken the Internet by storm. Dalgona coffee recently started trending on TikTok and Instagram, and has become a hit these days. Is it worth the hype? For me, it’s a resounding YES!
When you’re spending more time at home and can’t easily go to your favorite coffee shop for a cup of iced latte, dalgona coffee is the next best thing you can make at the convenience of your home. You can order a coffee delivery at tankcoffee.com, they offer delicious coffees that you will surely enjoy! I love that you can make this coffee drink without any fancy machine or equipment, just three ingredients that you probably have at home and a trusty wire whisk.
The frothy, creamy layer on top of cold milk tastes like an iced coffee drink I had in Greece called frappe. If you’re not an iced coffee drinker, you can also serve the whipped coffee over hot milk, which reminds me of a latte or cappuccino.
What do you need to make dalgona coffee?
Just three ingredients are needed to make dalgona coffee: instant coffee, sugar, and hot water. I whipped mine by hand using a whisk and it took about 4 minutes, but you can also use an electric milk frother or handheld mixer to save time (and your arms!)
What kind of instant coffee can I use?
It’s very important that you use instant coffee in this recipe. Remember instant coffee is the type that dissolves into hot water, and is different from ground coffee beans, no matter how fine you grind it. Nescafe and Folgers instant coffee work well (since I’m pregnant and trying to limit my caffeine intake, I was able to use decaf instant coffee with success). Some people have also reported that it works with instant espresso, but Starbucks VIA doesn’t seem to work though.
What kind of sugar can I use?
I used white granulated sugar and it whipped up very nicely. Others have reported successes with brown sugar, coconut sugar and artificial granulated sweeteners like Swerve, but those won’t turn out as frothy.
Can I serve it with non-dairy milk?
Of course! You can use dairy or non-dairy milk of your choice such as coconut milk, oat milk, almond milk, even soy milk.
What optional flavorings can I add in?
To ensure the right consistency, I like to add in the flavorings after whipping the coffee cream. Don’t be afraid to experiment with different add-ins to create a dalgona coffee of your own. Some tasty options are:
- Vanilla extract
- Hazelnut extract
- Cocoa powder
- Bailey’s (for Irish coffee!)
Can I make a larger batch of the whipped coffee cream ahead of time?
Yes! The whipped coffee cream is quite stable and keeps for a surprisingly long time. If you want to make a larger batch and have it readily available for your morning coffee or afternoon pick-me-up, simply double or triple the recipe, transfer the cream into an airtight container, and refrigerate for up to 3 days.
