When it comes to pizza, everyone seems to have their own preferences. Some like it thin and crispy, while others like it thick and chewy. Anyone else a big fan of Greek salad? I think it’s amazing and even better when the salad ingredients are used as pizza toppings. And that’s how I came up with this Greek Pizza! It’s safe to say that it will stay in our regular pizza rotation. This homemade pizza is impossible not to like because it really has it all: soft and chewy texture with crisp edges and yummy mediterranean flavors!
I know a lot of people feel intimidated when making homemade dough due to fear of baking with yeast. I used Fleischmann’s® RapidRise® Yeast for the best results. With Fleischmann’s 150 years of experience, the taste and quality of homemade yeast recipes made what makes it worth it. Be sure to check out this page for more delicious ways you can use Fleischmann’s® RapidRise® Yeast in your cooking. There’s really nothing better than the smell of yeasty dough bubbling up while baking.
When working with yeast, the most important factor of success is the water temperature. The water should be warm and not hot, otherwise it will kill the yeast. Water shouldn’t be cold either, otherwise the yeast won’t activate. Add water heated to 120˚F-130˚F and follow recipe instructions. I always use a thermometer to check the water temperature. But if you don’t have a thermometer, just dip your finger in the water and it should feel warm to the touch (not hot and not too cold). Also, be sure to check the expiration date on the yeast packet. Using expired yeast is often the reason for the dough not rising properly. I love this recipe because it’s super easy to make, takes only 30 minutes to prepare and there’s no need for stand or handheld mixer here. It’s perfectly okay to just mix and knead by hand. Here’s what it looks like after 4 minutes of kneading and 10 minutes of rise time: Perfectly shaping a pizza can be tricky and may take a few tries before it becomes easy. I recommend using your fingertips to put outward and shape the dough into a circle. If the dough isn’t stretching well, let it rest for a few minutes, then try again. By the way, this recipe makes one 12 inch thinly crust pizza, but you can feel free to turn it into a 9 inch thick crust pizza if that’s what you prefer. To make the pizza, I spread a thin and even layer of pizza sauce on the bottom, then sprinkle some mozzarella cheese on top. Next, for toppings, I decided to go with Greek flavors such as artichoke hearts, kalamata olives, peppers, red onions, oregano, and feta cheese.
I hope this quick and easy recipe has inspired you to make your own pizza from scratch because nothing tastes better than homemade!
30-Minute Homemade Greek Pizza
Ingredients
- 1 3/4 to 2 1/4 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 envelope Fleischmann's® RapidRise Yeast
- 1 1/2 tsp sugar
- 3/4 tsp salt
- 2/3 cup very warm water 120° to 130°F
- 3 tbsps Mazola corn oil
- 2/3 cup pizza sauce
- 1 1/2 cups shredded mozzarella cheese
- 1/2 tsp dried oregano
- 1/4 cup sliced red onions
- 1/4 cup sliced red bell peppers
- 1/4 cup sliced kalamata olives
- 1/2 cup canned artichoke hearts drained and quartered
- 1/2 cup crumbled feta cheese
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 425°F.
- Combine 1 cup flour, undissolved yeast, sugar and salt in a large bowl. Add very warm water and oil; mix until well blended, about 1 minute.
- Gradually add enough remaining flour to make a soft dough. Dough should form a ball and will be slightly sticky. Knead on a floured surface, adding additional flour if necessary, until smooth and elastic, about 4 minutes.
- Pat dough with floured hands to shape into a 12" circle and place on a greased pizza pan or baking sheet. Form a rim by pinching the edge of the dough.
- Spread pizza sauce evenly over the pizza dough. Sprinkle mozzarella cheese, oregano, red onions, peppers, olives, artichoke hearts, and feta cheese evenly over the pizza.
- Bake on lowest oven rack for 12 to 15 minutes, until cheese is bubbly and crust is golden brown.
